"eww! cheeeee!! that auto guy just spat on the road. but theek hai, its delhi. this place is like this only."
" yahin par phenk doon? i shouldnt throw it on the road nah? but this is delhi... everyone here is like this only."
" oh i looooooooove chandigarh! thats my home...everything there is just so nice! the roads are clean, people dont stand and pee by the walls, you get fined for spitting on the road..and greenery! oh i cant wait to get bck home!" :
These are just few of the samples of the kind of stuff that i get to hear EVERYDAY. From who? people who have left their precious cities where they have been mollycoddled for life and have come here to study cz the opportunities are so much better... the colleges, the faculties, the elusive DELHI UNIVERSITY tag...et al. And come they do, thousands they do pay for renting PGs, years they do spend here. But all the time thinking of this city as a forced temporary shelter.
Why is it that people who come from outside city are willing to use up the resources, make the most of the opportunities coming their way, live a kind of life that would be unthinkable in their otherwise mundane lives...and criticize the place!? When its something great about the city ( like the options in Italian cuisine restaurants, the exclusive brand outlets, the job opportunities etc) people are more than willing to make use of the facilities taking them for granted and showing the least bit of appreciation, but when it is something bad, they suddenly seem to alienate the city calling it an excuse of a metro.a place where it is okay to throw bits of paper on the road or dispose off a soiled tissue or an apple core on the pavement...a place which could never be their home.
I am not against people from outside coming and living here, making the city their home. But i AM against the way that things concerning Delhi are taken for granted. If spitting on the road, littering the place, disposing off your waste, relieving yourself in public, road rage, harrassment and law problems are objectionable things in your city then are they not so in other places too?
and then they wonder why they call them outsiders and feel isolated?

i dunno how much its due to jealousy...but it certainly IS out of a false sense of superiority :|
boy...dont i jus love burstin thr bubble whn they start off infront of me! *tee hee hee* :D
@flo
hmmm...delhi is as nice a place as people want it to be. :)
a very valid observation krit... and i agree with u completely... as a person who has lived in 4 major cities of India, I have seen this attitude amongst most "outsiders". Frankly, speaking what they never realise is that they live here.... if they don't do their two cents worth to make this place a tad bit better, then I'd put it this way "god!! u live in such a dirty city!!". sounds good??
not really!! I stay in pune.. and i'll defend it of all its flaws... hghlight all the positive aspects!!
And probably I'll do the same for Mumbai, Kolkata and Delhi!!
Some ppl are too disgusting!!
btw, kritz, next time someone says it was better back home... ask dem to take their royal a***s to wer they come from.... i agree with mystic on this one!!
@ sam

ME MEEE MEEEEEE!!!! I WANNA GO TOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
i miss my poor old nice delhhiii :(
I cannot more agree with you on this.
But fact remains that the delhi govt also has a rather lackadaisical attitude when it comes to implementing stricter measures. When we are comparing delhi with a rather well maintained city like chandigarh,
we must realise that there the govt actually imposes fine on people who deface the city walls or dirty the streets. And its not that its a very difficult task. Just that the delhi govt doesn't want to take up the cudgels for obvious petty vote bank reasons
And honestly, i would not like to comment on the attitude the delhi wallas have towards their own city
Thoughtful post though :)
@ arunabh
yeah i could not agree with you more. you are right about the delhiwallas and the govt. being lax about the basic things. and thats what bugs me even more. n the funniest thing (though im not laughing!) is that if you point these things out to people they think you're getting all preachy and nagging. :|
Ultimately its teh problematic attitude of "Chalta Hai".. "arre thik hai bhaiyya.. chalta hai!!"
i swear! everyone has that attitude... me too in a lot of cases come to think of it :|
procrastination and devil may care attitudes rule the day with most me feels.
